    What the numbers mean

Download (incoming speed) is how fast websites, videos and files open. Upload (outgoing speed) is how fast you send photos to the cloud, files and your own picture in a video call. Both are in megabits per second: 100 Mbps is about 12 megabytes per second.

Latency, or ping, is the time a signal takes to reach the server and come back. For games and calls it matters more than speed: with a ping over 100 ms voices lag behind and games start to "lag". Jitter shows how much the latency jumps around. The lower it is, the steadier the connection.

    How we measure

The test runs in your browser and exchanges data with the nearest Cloudflare server, one of the largest networks in the world. First 20 short requests for latency, then downloading and uploading files of growing size in several streams. The first seconds are ignored while the connection speeds up.

Why the result is lower than your plan

Your ISP promises speed "up to", over the cable to your home. Wi-Fi through a wall, an old router, a VPN, other devices on the network and the busy evening hours can easily eat half of it. For a fair test, connect your computer with a cable and repeat the test a few times at different hours.

    • For one person 25-50 Mbps is enough: 4K video, calls and games will run without problems. A family with several screens is better off with 100 Mbps or more. Upload matters if you often send large files or stream.

    • Ping is the delay of a signal to the server and back, in milliseconds. Up to 30 ms is excellent, up to 60 ms is good for gaming, up to 100 ms is fine for calls. Over 150 ms is noticeable in conversations and games.

    • Internet speed is measured in megabits, file size in megabytes. One byte has 8 bits, so 100 Mbps is about 12 MB/s: a 1 GB file downloads in about a minute and a half.

    • Each test measures to its own server: one is in the next town, another in a different country. The number of streams and the time of the test matter too. Compare results of the same test at different times, that's why history is saved here.

    • It depends on the speed: a few megabytes on a slow connection, up to 200 MB on a fast one. On mobile data with a cap, better test over Wi-Fi.

    • No. The test runs between your browser and the Cloudflare network, our server is not involved. The history of recent tests is stored only in your browser.
