What an IP address tells you

The country, region and city the address is tied to, the ISP and its network number (ASN), the time zone and local time. Reverse DNS often hints at who owns a server: for mail and cloud servers it usually shows the company name.

Network type: home, mobile or data center

Home and mobile ISP addresses are given to people. Data center addresses belong to hosting, cloud and VPN services. If an email, an order or a login comes from a data center or Tor IP, take a closer look at it.

Why the city may be wrong

Geolocation databases know where the ISP registered its addresses, not where the computer is. So an IP often shows a nearby large city or the capital. Street-level accuracy is impossible with an IP.

  • No. An IP only shows the ISP and an approximate location, usually a city. Only the ISP knows the subscriber's exact address and gives it out only on an official request.

  • IPv4 is a short address of four numbers, like 8.8.8.8. IPv6 is the newer long format with colons, like 2001:4860:4860::8888. The lookup works with both.

  • An autonomous system number identifies the network of one ISP or company. It shows who owns a block of addresses. Whois gives more details about the network.

  • A name the owner set for an IP address (a PTR record). Mail servers must have one, otherwise their emails land in spam more often. For home addresses it usually contains the ISP's name.

  • Addresses like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16-31.x.x only work inside a home or office network. They aren't visible on the internet, so they have no country or ISP.

  • Yes, about 40 addresses per hour per connection. That's enough for normal use. You can check your own IP without limits.
