What whois is

A public record about a domain or a block of IP addresses. It shows which registrar the domain was bought through, when it was created and until when it's paid, which name servers it uses and what locks it has. We get the data via the RDAP protocol, and for zones without it, like .ru, from classic whois.

Why check a domain

Domain age helps you decide whether to trust a site: a shop opened a week ago deserves less trust than one running for ten years. The expiry date helps you keep your own domain or catch one you want when it's released. The abuse contact is useful if a site sends spam or pretends to be someone else.

Why the owner is hidden

Most registrars hide the name and email of private owners because data protection laws require it. Usually only organizations are visible. You can contact the owner through the registrar.

  • Enter it in the field. If the registry doesn't know the domain, we'll show "Domain not found", which most likely means you can register it. The registrar will confirm when you buy it.

  • These are domain lock codes. For example, clientTransferProhibited blocks a transfer to another registrar without the owner's consent, which is normal theft protection. We add a short explanation to common codes.

  • The site and email stop working. For a few weeks the owner can still renew it, then the domain is released and anyone can buy it. Renew in advance, or better, turn on auto-renewal.

  • A newer standard that replaces whois: the same data in a machine-readable format. Almost all zones and IP registries support it. For zones without RDAP we query classic whois.

  • Yes. For an IP we show the range and network, organization, country and abuse contact. For an AS number like AS15169, its name and organization.

  • We query the registry when you check and keep the answer for an hour. If the domain was just renewed, check again later.
