DNS leak

When you open a site, the browser first asks a DNS server for its address. If these requests go to your ISP's servers instead of through the VPN, your ISP sees which sites you open, and sites see that the DNS server is in another country. Without a VPN, public DNS (Google, Cloudflare) may show another country, and that is normal.

How to fix it

Turn on DNS leak protection in your VPN app or use the VPN's own DNS servers. On Windows, turn off "smart" name resolution, and in the browser turn off built-in "secure DNS" if it does not go through the VPN.

WebRTC leak

WebRTC is used for video calls in the browser. It can show a site your real IP, bypassing the VPN.

How to fix it

Turn on WebRTC protection in your VPN app or install an extension that blocks it. In Firefox, WebRTC is turned off with the media.peerconnection.enabled setting on the about:config page.

IPv6 leak

Many VPNs only protect IPv4. If your ISP has IPv6, some sites will see your real IPv6 address.

How to fix it

Turn on IPv6 support or IPv6 blocking in your VPN. If it has neither, turn off IPv6 in your network adapter or router settings.

Time zone

A site sees the time on your device. If it does not match the time zone of your IP's country, it is clear you are on a VPN.

How to fix it

Set your device to the time zone of the country you connect through, or pick a VPN server in your own time zone.

Browser language

The browser tells sites which languages you prefer. An unusual language for your IP's country is another sign of a VPN.

How to fix it

Add the language of the VPN server's country in your browser settings, or pick a server in a country where your language is spoken.

IP location data: IP Geolocation by DB-IP. DNS test: bash.ws. WebRTC, IPv6, time zone and language checks run in your browser.

How to use

How to test your VPN for leaks

  1. 1Turn on the VPNand open this page in the same browser
  2. 2Wait for the resultall checks run by themselves and take a few seconds
  3. 3Fix the leakseach one has a tip, then press "Check again"

What a leak is

A VPN hides your IP behind its server's address. But your browser and system can give away your real address or country in other ways: WebRTC, DNS requests, IPv6, the time on your device and your language. A site can compare any of these signs with your IP and figure out that you are on a VPN.

When it matters

Payment systems, ad accounts and marketplaces check for such mismatches and may send your account for review. Streaming services use them to block access. And with a DNS leak your ISP sees which sites you open even with the VPN on.

What else to check

Details about your address, such as ISP, location on the map and blacklists, are on the page My IP. If you use a proxy, check its anonymity with the proxy checker.

  • Yes, otherwise there is nothing to test: without a VPN, sites already see your real IP. Turn on the VPN, open the page and look at the result.

  • It is when lookups of site addresses go to your ISP's DNS server instead of through the VPN. Your ISP sees which sites you open, and sites may notice that the DNS server is in another country.

  • It means you have no IPv6 or the VPN blocks it. That is good: in this case there can be no IPv6 leak.

  • It does not reveal your address, but it shows the site you are most likely on a VPN. If that matters (payment systems, ad accounts), set your device to the time zone of the VPN server's country.

  • The browser gets addresses for video calls directly from a STUN server, sometimes bypassing the VPN. Good VPN apps block this, and for the rest there are extensions that turn off WebRTC.

  • No. Most checks run in your browser, and the server needs your IP and DNS servers only to answer the request; they are not recorded.
