What is llms.txt

It is a Markdown text file that sits in the root of a site at /llms.txt. It briefly says what the site is and collects links to the most useful pages, with notes. Jeremy Howard proposed the format in 2024, and the spec is published at llmstxt.org.

The structure is simple: a title heading, a quote with a short summary, optional paragraphs with details, and sections with lists of links. A section named Optional marks what AI can skip when it needs to shorten the text.

Why you need it

Language models read sites differently from people: menus, ads and scripts only get in the way, and the amount of text a model can keep in mind is limited. llms.txt gives a short map of the site in a form the model understands. AI assistants and code editors read it when someone asks them to make sense of your product or docs.

To be honest about the benefits: search engines do not promise to use llms.txt yet, and not every AI bot requests it. But the file takes a few minutes to make, breaks nothing and already helps wherever an assistant is given a link to your site.

How it differs from robots.txt and sitemap.xml

robots.txt tells bots where they may not go. sitemap.xml lists every page for search engines, without explanations. llms.txt blocks nothing and does not try to cover everything: it is a short story about the site and a selection of key links with descriptions. To block AI bots from your site, use robots.txt.

  • In the root of your site, so it opens at example.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, Tilda and other site builders you upload it through the settings or a plugin; on your own server, put it in the site folder next to robots.txt.

  • Links that are nice to have: company history, news archive, secondary reference pages. If AI needs to save space, it skips this section first.

  • No, sitemap.xml is there for the full list. llms.txt usually holds the 10-30 most useful pages: pricing, docs, FAQs, shipping and return terms.

  • It is an optional second file that puts all of your documentation into a single Markdown document. It is mostly made by developer services. A regular site does fine with an llms.txt full of links.

  • Not directly: Google and other search engines do not list it as a ranking factor. The file helps AI assistants understand your site correctly, which can lead to mentions and visits from chatbot answers.

  • No. The file is built right in your browser; we do not store or see anything.
