What the tool counts

Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, unique words, average word and sentence length. Reading and speaking time use the average speed for the language of the text: people read about 240 English words per minute and about 180 Russian ones, and speak slower, 120-150 words per minute.

Readability

The reading ease score shows how simple a text is to take in: the longer the sentences and words, the lower the score. For English it is the classic Flesch formula, for Russian its adaptation by Oborneva, and for Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian and Turkish the established versions for those languages. A score of 60-70 is a regular text for a wide audience, above 80 is very easy, below 50 is already heavy going.

Vocabulary diversity

TTR is the share of unique words. It depends on text length, so MTLD is shown next to it: it is stable across lengths and handy for comparing texts. Below 50 words repeat often, above 80 the vocabulary is rich. The list of frequent words helps you spot repetition and check that your SEO keywords are in place.

  • Any run of letters or digits. Hyphenated words and words with apostrophes ("well-known", "don't") count as one word. For Japanese the browser decides where words end, and reading time is based on characters.

  • We count every character, including spaces, line breaks and emoji. Some platforms count differently: X replaces any link with 23 characters, and emoji or CJK characters may count as two. If you are close to the limit, keep a 5-10% margin.

  • From the rules and help pages of the platforms themselves. Limits change from time to time, so check with the platform before an important post. If you notice a mismatch, write to us and we will update it.

  • It is a number from 0 to 100: the higher, the easier the text reads. Long sentences and long words lower it. The simplest way to raise it is to split sentences longer than 20 words in two and replace heavy words with short ones.

  • The word count is divided by the average reading speed for the language: about 240 words per minute for English and 180 for Russian. Speaking time uses the pace of a calm talk, 120-150 words per minute. It is an estimate: complex text is read slower.

  • A measure of vocabulary diversity that, unlike the plain share of unique words, barely depends on text length. It shows how many words you can read on average before the share of new words drops below a threshold. Below 50 there is a lot of repetition, above 80 the vocabulary is rich.

  • No. Everything is counted right in your browser, the text never leaves it. You can safely check personal letters, contracts and work documents.
