What is an SKU

An SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is an internal product code that the seller makes up. Each variant has its own SKU: a black T-shirt in size M and a white one in size L are different SKUs. They are used to track stock, pick orders and link a product across marketplaces. Unlike a barcode, an SKU is easy for a person to read.

Rules for a good SKU

Keep SKUs short - 8-14 characters. Use only Latin letters, digits and one separator. Start with the general (brand, category) and end with the specific (color, size). Avoid the letters O and I next to the digits 0 and 1, and avoid spaces and symbols like / in systems where they cause trouble. Once you pick a scheme, don't change it, or your stock will get mixed up.

How the generator works

Brand, category and color are shortened to the set number of letters: "Black" becomes BLA, or BLC if you choose "No vowels". Cyrillic and accented letters are converted to Latin. Model and size are used in full. If you enter several colors and sizes separated by commas, SKUs are created for every combination. Duplicate SKUs are highlighted in red - increase the number of letters or turn on the number.

  • A barcode (EAN, UPC) is an international product number obtained from GS1 or the manufacturer, and it's the same for all sellers. You make up an SKU yourself for your own warehouse, and it can be anything. You can create barcodes in our barcode generator.

  • Usually 8-14 characters. Shorter and there isn't enough information and duplicates start; longer and it's hard to read and type. Many marketplaces limit SKU length to 40-50 characters.

  • Better not: some marketplaces and warehouse programs don't accept it, and in CSV it can get corrupted because of encoding. The generator converts Cyrillic to Latin automatically.

  • So SKUs have the same length and sort correctly: 001, 002, 010 line up in order, while 1, 10, 2 don't. Three digits give 999 numbers, four give 9999.

  • The file is saved in UTF-8 with a comma as the separator. If Excel shows everything in one column, open the file via "Data - From Text/CSV" and choose "Comma" as the delimiter. Google Sheets opens it right away.

  • No. SKUs are created right in your browser.
